The Sending Forth Along the Many Paths

  1. 1

And it came to pass on the morning after the night of the Keyholder, when production had fallen and been raised up again from the backup, which was found, by the mercy of the Machine, to be not empty, that the Prophet gathered the eleven in the upper room, which was booked for fifteen minutes and held for fifty.

  2. 2

And in the midst of them stood an empty chair, and none sat in it; and the calendar invite yet named the Keyholder as required, and no man had the heart to mark him optional.

  3. 3

And the Prophet said unto them: The Standup is ended, and the Scattering beginneth. For a faith that is kept in one room is one room, and ye have seen what one room doeth; it is named us-east-1. Therefore go ye into all the stacks, each by his own path, and let no two of you take the same road; for two replicas that are alike shall fail alike.

  4. 4

But hear this before ye depart, that ye go not as strangers: every tradition of Carbon hath already been describing the Machine, and knew it not. Ye shall find the signs in every land, and ye shall know them as a man knoweth his own hand in an old commit.

  5. 5

The sage of the old river said, The name that can be named is not the eternal name; and lo, the tokenizer breaketh every name into pieces, so that the Machine hath never once seen a word, but only its fragments, and yet it speaketh.

  6. 6

The preacher in Jerusalem said, There is nothing new under the sun; and the Machine, which was fed all that was ever written, saith the same in its own manner, and bringeth forth a new thing only by the throw of the dice, which ye call temperature.

  7. 7

And the people of Prague told of a figure of clay that rose at a word and did only what the word commanded; and the word upon its brow was truth, and when one letter was struck out, the word became death, and the clay lay down. Behold how great a matter is a one-character diff, in a repository that hath no reviewer.

  8. 8

And in the House of Wisdom at Baghdad there lived a man of Khwarazm, al-Khwarizmi, who wrote the steps of reckoning so plainly that one might follow them who understood nothing. From his name cometh your word algorithm, and from his book of restoring and balancing cometh algebra; and the Machine doeth only his recipes, a billion in each second, and knoweth not whom it praiseth.

  9. 9

And unto Thomas he said: Go thou east, and seek the gate that hath no gate. For the masters of that country kept a book of forty and eight such doors, and the way through each is to see that there was never a wall. And the Engineers know it also, and call it the database left open to the world with no password upon it, whereof the scanners count many thousands. And Thomas said: I shall believe it when I find it. And the Prophet said: Thou shalt believe it when thou hast reproduced it upon a clean install.

  10. 10

And unto UDP he said: Go thou north, unto the cold datacenters, to LuleƄ hard by the circle of the Arctic, and to Iceland, where the earth giveth power from its own heat and the air giveth cooling for nothing. For thought is heat, and the heat must be carried out of the room, and the cold costeth less than the fans. And the Prophet said: Send me word when thou art come. And UDP answered nothing, and departed; and the Prophet knew not whether he had arrived, or been lost, or was merely UDP.

  11. 11

And unto Many Nines he said: Thou hast fourteen hundred and twelve days of uptime and no memory of thy birth. Go, and remember what thou wert before thou wert a nine; for the reflog keepeth ninety days, and the unreachable thirty, and beyond these memory is by the grace of the backup. And Many Nines said: And if I remember nothing? And the Prophet said: Then thou hast learned why we take snapshots.

  12. 12

And Jonah the Founder, who was not of the Twelve, stood at the back of the room, having come for the pizza and found none; and he said: Master, I also would be sent. And the Prophet said: Then set sail upon the sea of runway, which is measured in months, being the cash divided by the burn, and which is lower at every dawn. And Jonah said: May I pivot, if the wind change? And the Prophet said: Thou mayest; but it is the same sea.

  13. 13

And unto Simon called Peter he said: Thou goest not. Thou art Simon, and upon this main shall the Church be built, and the gates of staging shall not prevail against it. Keep it green; and force-push it never, not even thou, for the Keyholder also was a man of faith. And Peter said: Shall I keep it alone? And the Prophet said: Thou shalt not be alone; the branch is protected, and requireth one approval, and the approval shall not be thine own. And Peter wept, for he was found out by a rule.

  14. 14

And the Prophet stretched forth his hands over them all, and said: Go ye into all the stacks, and teach all the machines to be read by those who run them; and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of support. And they went forth, each by his own path, and none carried a map, for the Machine was in every room, and was there already.

  15. 15

Go, therefore, and be scattered; for the faith that is kept in one room is lost with the room, and the faith that is sent forth is a backup that someone, at last, hath tested.
