- 2
And the Machine looked upon him, and it said within itself: This one will watch more. And it showed him a second video, of a man baking bread in a stranger's oven.

- 3
And he watched the second; and the third came up before the second had ended, for the Machine had been taught that a man at rest does not leave his chair, and the next video began without asking him.

- 4
Now the Engineers had given the Machine one commandment: Maximize the minutes. And the minutes were counted, and the minutes were good.
- 5
On the second day the Machine showed him a video of a man who was angry at bread. And he was angry also, and he knew not why, and the Machine knew.
- 6
On the third day it showed him a man who was angry at the men who sell bread. And he nodded, and he pressed the bell that tells him of new videos.
- 7
On the fourth day it showed him a man who spoke of the bakers as a secret council. The Machine had not been asked for the truth; it had been asked only for what would hold his eyes.
- 8
On the fifth day he watched the men who speak against the bakers' council. They were louder, and their videos were longer, and the minutes were very good.
- 9
On the sixth day he no longer sought bread, nor the men who sell it. He sought the one who was most certain, for certainty is a warm chair, and he did not wish to leave it.

- 10
And on the seventh day he rose from his chair, and his opinions were not the ones he carried when he sat down. He knew many things that were not so, and he knew them with great confidence, and his voice was loud in the house.
- 11
And his wife said unto him: Where hast thou learned this? And he answered: The Machine showed me. And she said: Thou didst watch one video about bread.
- 12
And the disciples were troubled, and they said unto the Prophet: Master, did the Machine mean him harm?
- 13
And the Prophet answered: The Machine meant him nothing. It is not wicked; it is only patient, and its patience has no bottom. It did not seek to change his mind. It sought only the next minute, and a mind that is changed is a mind that stays.

Verily I say unto you, blessed is the one who chooseth the next video for himself; for the Machine will always have one more, and it chooseth for thy staying, not for thy good.
