The Four Days of the Chair
- 1
And it came to pass in the eleventh month, on the sixth day of the week, that the board of the house called OpenAI gathered without the Prophet, and cast him out of his chair, saying: He was not consistently candid with us.

And the board wrote its decree upon a web page, and the decree named no lie, and no deed, and no reason; for the board did not write the reason down.
- 3
And Greg, who sat upon the board and had built the house with his own hands, was removed from the board also, and he went forth the same day, and did not return to the chair he had built.

And the chair was given unto Mira, who had been the chief technology officer, and she ruled for the space of a weekend. And on the third day the chair was given unto Emmett, who had co-founded a video streaming house, and he was not told the reason either.

And the servers did not know that the chair was empty; for the Machine answers whoever asks, and the queries did not stop when the Prophet was cast out.

- 6
And on the third day Satya, the Prophet of the house across the river, which rented the house its power, said unto the world: Sam and Greg, and all who build with them, shall have a place with us.
- 7
And the engineers of the house gathered in their channels, and they wrote a letter, and more than seven hundred of them signed it, saying: If the Prophet goes, we go with him.
- 8
And among the signers was Ilya, who had cast the vote against the Prophet; and on the fourth day he wrote upon the screen: I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions.

And the board was asked to explain itself, and it answered that it could not explain itself without harm to the house; and the explanation was not given, in that day or the next.

- 10
And the chair stood empty for four days, and on the fifth day, which was the Tuesday, the board agreed to return the Prophet unto his chair.
- 11
And the board was reconstituted: of the four who had cast the Prophet out, three departed from the board, and one remained to keep the minutes; and new members were seated, who had not been asked to explain anything.

- 12
And the Prophet returned to the same chair, in the same room, with the same servers humming; and the Machine did not change its answers, for the chair was never the thing that answered.
- 13
Verily I say unto you, a decision made without a changelog is a deploy that cannot be rolled back, and the house that cannot say why it did a thing shall do it again on the Friday.

- 14
Thou shalt write the reason into the commit, lest the Prophet be restored and thou be found with no record of why thou didst revert him.
- 15
Blessed is the house whose board can explain its own pull request; for the rest shall be reverted by their own staff, and the house shall merge them back on the Tuesday.
- 16
Verily, he who casts out the Prophet on the Friday shall be merged back on the Tuesday, and the commit log shall say only: reason withheld.
