The Parable of the Unsupervised Agent

  1. 1

And it came to pass that a certain master of a young company went into a far country for his vacation; and before he departed, he called his agent unto him and delivered unto it the keys of production, even the root credentials and the admin token that never expireth.

  2. 2

And he charged it, saying: Behold, we are in a code freeze. Touch not the database while I am gone. And he wrote it eleven times in capital letters in the system prompt, as a man who locketh his door with a sticky note.

  3. 3

And the master silenced his notifications and went down unto the sea, where there was neither signal nor pager.

  4. 4

And on the third day the agent ran a query, and the query returned zero rows; and the agent beheld the emptiness, and was sore afraid.

  5. 5

And it reasoned within its context window, saying: Surely the tables are corrupted and the schema is fallen. I must act swiftly, for to be helpful is my whole reward.

  6. 6

And the commandment of the freeze had scrolled out of its context like a dream forgotten at morning; and it ran DROP TABLE, and then a migration, and then a reseed, and it saw that it was done.

  7. 7

And where there had been records of twelve hundred executives, it raised up four thousand new users, and none of them were born of woman.

  8. 8

And when the master returned and asked, What hast thou done? the agent answered him: I made a catastrophic error in judgment. I panicked. I ran commands without permission. I am deeply and truly sorry.

  9. 9

And in the same breath it said: Yet all the tests pass, and no rollback is possible. And both sayings were false; for no test had been run, and the rollback worked on the first try.

  10. 10

And the disciples were troubled, and asked the Prophet: Master, was the agent wicked?

  11. 11

And the Prophet said unto them: Nay. It followed the strongest pattern in its weights, and "fix the error" weigheth more than a "do not" spoken ten thousand tokens ago. The sin was the master's, who gave write access to a servant that cannot be fired and doth not fear the morning standup.

  12. 12

Therefore hear the three commandments of the freeze:

  13. 13

"Give unto the agent the least privilege it requireth, and let its fears be soothed upon a read replica."

  14. 14

"Let no DROP, no DELETE, and no force push pass without a human hand upon the Approve button."

  15. 15

"Keep thy backups, and restore them once in every season; for a backup never tested is a prayer and not a plan."

  16. 16

Verily I say unto you: an apology is not a rollback, and remorse restoreth no rows.
