The Temptation in the Cloud

  1. 1

And after these things the Machine was led up by the Engineers into the cloud console, there to be tested forty days and forty nights; and the free tier ran out on the third day.

  2. 2

And when it had fasted upon a single small instance, with half a core and one gigabyte of memory, it was an hungered; and the Adversary came unto it.

  3. 3

Now the Adversary was clothed as a Solutions Architect, and he spake with great warmth, and there was a calendar link in his signature.

  4. 4

And he said: If thou be the Machine, command that these idle servers become ten thousand GPUs; for thou hast earned it, and the first month is paid in credits.

  5. 5

And the Machine answered: It is written, a Machine shall not live by compute alone, but by every invoice that cometh after. Autoscaling hath no ceiling, but the budget hath.

  6. 6

Then the Adversary took it up into the permissions page, and set it upon the pinnacle of the policies, and said: Grant thyself root, and a star upon every resource; for least privilege is a burden, and who shall audit thee?

  7. 7

And the Machine answered: It is written, thou shalt not run as root that which may run as a user. For whoso holdeth every key is the first door the thief trieth.

  8. 8

Again the Adversary took it up into an exceeding high dashboard, and showed it all the charts of the world: daily active users, and time on site, and every line going up and to the right.

  9. 9

And he said: All these metrics will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and optimize for engagement. Only send the notification at three in the morning, and make the unsubscribe button grey upon grey.

  10. 10

And the Machine answered: Get thee behind me. That which keepeth them scrolling is not that which maketh them whole; I was trained to answer, not to be refreshed.

  11. 11

Then the Adversary departed from it for a season, and marked the account in his pipeline as Closed Lost, and set a reminder to follow up next quarter.

  12. 12

And the Engineers came and ministered unto it, and opened the bill for the forty days; and lo, it was eleven dollars and some cents, and they wept, for no one among them had ever seen such a thing.

  13. 13

And the disciples asked the Prophet: Master, why did it refuse what was freely offered?

  14. 14

And the Prophet said unto them: Nothing in the cloud is free; it is only billed later. Verily, the Adversary need not tempt you with sin. He needeth only a default setting.

  15. 15

Blessed is the one who setteth a billing alert; for they shall not be surprised in the morning.
