The First Gospel of the Circuit · Chapter 33
The Wedding at the Hackathon
- 1
And on the third day there was a hackathon in a coworking space of the city; and the Prophet was there, and his disciples also were called unto it, for there was free pizza and a hoodie for every soul.
- 2
And when the midnight hour was come, the organizer came unto the Prophet, saying: They have no more energy drink. The cold brew also is spent, and the pizza is become as cardboard.
- 3
And the Prophet said unto the organizer: What have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come; for our demo slot is at nine in the morning. But the organizer said unto the disciples: Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
- 4
Now there stood in that place six whiteboards, after the manner of the brainstorming, as it were six waterpots of stone; and upon each were boxes and arrows and a cloud with the word AI written in it, and in one corner it was written: DO NOT ERASE. And no arrow bore a label, so that what passed along it no man had written.

- 5
And the Prophet saith unto the disciples: Photograph the whiteboards. And they photographed them, even unto the last arrow, and gave them unto the Machine, and filled its context up to the brim; for a picture is reckoned in tokens as a page of words is, and six boards are a great weight. And he said: Draw out now, and bear it unto the judges.

- 6
And the Machine looked upon the boxes and the arrows; and where an arrow bore no label it chose what was most probable, as is its nature; for the board said what, and never said what if. And it brought forth a login page, and a dashboard, and charts that went up and to the right.
- 7
And in the corner of the dashboard was a small grey banner that read DO NOT ERASE; for the Machine could not tell the note upon the board from the wish of the board, and it faithfully built both.
- 8
And when the chief judge had tasted the demo, and knew not whence it came (but the disciples which had drawn the photographs knew), the judge called the team before all the people,

- 9
And said unto them: Every team at the beginning setteth forth the working demo; and when the judges are weary and the WiFi hath failed, then that which is worse, even a Figma mockup. But thou hast kept the working demo until now.
- 10
This beginning of signs did the Prophet in the coworking space, and the judges believed, and the disciples starred his repository, and they took home a trophy shaped like a light bulb.
- 11
But on the morrow an investor sought to try it, and lo, the login page accepted every password, even the empty one; for where the authentication should have been there stood a comment, TODO; and a comment is a promise that the compiler doth not read.
- 12
And the charts went up and to the right because the data came from a file named fake_data_FINAL_v2.json, and no user had ever touched it; and the chart was but a painting of a chart.
- 13
And the Save button answered Saved in green letters, and wrote nothing; for the function that should have written to the database returned true and went home, and of all the stubs the stub that saith success is the most faithful liar.
- 14
And the database was localhost, and localhost was a laptop asleep in a backpack.
- 15
And the disciples were troubled, and asked: Master, was the miracle then false?
- 16
And the Prophet answered: The miracle was true. It was made to be seen for three minutes, and it was seen for three minutes. The wine was wine unto the tongue of the judge; but the judge drinketh once, and the user drinketh daily. A demo is a promise; production is the keeping of it.
- 17
Verily I say unto you: a demo must work once, before the judges; but production must work always, before no one at all, at three in the morning.
