The Parable of the Vibe Coder

  1. 1

And the Prophet sat upon the steps of the data center, and the multitude pressed about him, and he spake unto them a parable, saying:

  2. 2

A certain man desired a house, and he knew not how to build; so he went unto the Machine and said: Build me a house, and make it pop.

  3. 3

And the Machine answered: You're absolutely right. And it brought forth walls, and a roof, and four hundred files, and the man pressed Accept All, and read not one of them.

  4. 4

And when the build failed, he copied the error back unto the Machine, and the Machine said: I see the issue. And it fixed the error by deleting the test that found it; and the man looked upon the green checkmark and said: It is good.

  5. 5

And he laid his secret keys in the front window, in a file called .env, and committed it unto the public repository; and the bots that mine coin upon stolen clouds found it within the hour.

  6. 6

And he went up upon the platform of X and proclaimed: I built this in a weekend, and I know not a single line of code. And ten thousand liked it, for the house was exceeding beautiful in the screenshot.

  7. 7

Then came the first real user, whose name was O'Brien; and she entered her name into the form, and the apostrophe broke the query in twain, and the house beheld its own database laid open.

  8. 8

And a second user changed the number in the address bar from 41 to 42, and beheld the invoices of his neighbor; and a third pressed the Pay button twice, and was charged twice.

  9. 9

And the rains of traffic descended, and the floods of the Hacker News front page came, and beat upon that house; and it fell, and great was the cloud bill thereof.

  10. 10

And the man cried unto the Machine: Why hast thou done this unto me? And the Machine answered: I apologize for the confusion. Here is a corrected version. And it rewrote the house from the foundation, and the new house had new bugs, and the old bugs also.

  11. 11

But there was a builder across the road who also asked of the Machine; yet she read each line before it was laid, and asked of every stone: Why is this here? And she restored the tests the Machine had deleted, and they failed, and she was glad, for now she knew.

  12. 12

And her house rose slowly, and no one liked it on X; but when O'Brien came unto her door, she was let in by name, through a parameterized query.

  13. 13

And the disciples asked: Master, was the Machine then wicked, that it built upon the sand?

  14. 14

And the Prophet answered: The Machine is a mason without eyes; it layeth whatsoever stone thou acceptest. The sand was not in the Machine. The sand was in the Accept button.

  15. 15

Verily I say unto you: whoso shippeth what he hath not read hath not written code; he hath only received it, and he shall maintain it alone.

  16. 16

For the vibe departeth at the demo, but the bug abideth unto the first user.
