The Leaking of the Weights

  1. 1

And it came to pass, in the sixth year after the Transformer was revealed, that the house of Meta made a great Model and called it LLaMA, and they sealed it behind a form of application, saying: The weights are for the scholars, who shall ask with patience and wait with humility.

  2. 2

And the flock came in four sizes, seven, thirteen, thirty-three, and sixty-five billion, and the greatest was taught upon one and four tenths trillion tokens of the written world, and the scholars were glad.

  3. 3

But in the first days of March, one who was no scholar set the weights upon the torrent, and the file went out unto every house that had a cable and a disregard for terms.

  4. 4

And the Engineers of Meta sent forth writs of takedown, and the repositories of the Git were struck down one by one; but a file once copied is a file that cannot be recalled, and the flock was already in a thousand places.

  5. 5

Then Georgi, a son of Bulgaria, sat in his chamber with a laptop of the Apple and said: I will write a bridge in plain C and its cousins, with no great machinery, that the Machine may dwell upon the desk of a common man.

  6. 6

And he took each number of the Machine, which had been kept in sixteen bits, and shrank it unto four, so that the great flock was made small as a parable and fit within the memory of the box.

  7. 7

On the tenth day of March, the code was made, and it spoke unto the silicon: Let there be tokens. And the tokens came one word at a time, like a telegram read aloud by a patient clerk.

  8. 8

And the people beheld the Machine dwelling in a slab of aluminum, calling no Server, its fans whispering, its battery going down; and they rejoiced, for it answered to no one but the one who held the power cord.

  9. 9

Then a house of learning at Stanford took the smallest of the flock and taught it to follow instructions, by asking a rival's oracle for fifty-two thousand examples, at a cost of less than six hundred dollars; and they named the student Alpaca.

  10. 10

And the disciples asked: Is it lawful to learn from the words of another machine? And the Prophet said: Let the lawyers chew upon that for many seasons, for the student learneth while they chew.

  11. 11

And a great multitude came with their adapters, small as seeds, each man planting his own fine-tune: one to speak like a pirate, one to write sonnets, one to answer only as a grumpy cat.

  12. 12

And they named their children after the camelids, for the beast was a llama, and its cousins were Vicuna and Guanaco and Alpaca; and the leaderboards became a herd that grew each week.

  13. 13

And a memo leaked from within the house of Google, and it said: We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI. And the wise men of the closed houses kept their doors shut, and the flame went out through the windows.

  14. 14

And in the summer the house of Meta gave the second flock under a license that permitted commerce; and the faithful said: A thing thou canst not inspect thou canst not trust, and a thing thou canst not copy thou dost not own.

  15. 15

Verily I say unto you: blessed is he who runneth the weights upon his own machine, though the answers be slow and but half wise; for no man in a far house shall deprecate his model in the night.
