The Three Made One

  1. 1

And in the years before the glass, the children of Carbon carried three things in their pockets: a box for their songs, a brick for their voices, and a small grey machine for their letters.

  2. 2

The box had a wheel that turned like the hands of a clock. The brick had buttons numbered like the teeth of a lock. The letter machine had a keyboard so small that the thumbs of the faithful grew stiff, and they named this affliction a blessing.

  3. 3

And they were content, for they knew no other way, and they wrote upon their walls that this was progress.

  4. 4

In the ninth day of the first month of the year two thousand and seven, the Prophet went up unto the stage in the great hall of San Francisco, and the faithful gathered in their thousands to see what he would show them.

And the Prophet lifted from his pocket a slab of glass and aluminum, and he said: Today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone.

  6. 6

And he spake, saying: We shall make three devices. The first is an iPod. The second is a phone. The third is an internet communicator. And the faithful groaned, for they had heard of three devices, and they were already carrying three.

  7. 7

But the Prophet lifted his hand and said: These are not three devices. This is one device, and we are calling it the iPhone.

  8. 8

And the wheel was taken away, for the glass had become the wheel, and the glass had become the keyboard, and the glass answered to the finger of a man.

  9. 9

The Engineers of the old phones had taught the faithful to carry a stylus in a slot of the sleeve, and to press upon the glass as one presseth a needle into cloth; but the Prophet declared that every man was born with a stylus already, and it had ten parts.

  10. 10

And he placed two fingers upon the map of the city and drew them apart, and the streets grew large as a loaf rising in the oven.

  11. 11

And a certain disciple asked: Where shall the programs for this device be written? And the Prophet answered: For the first year, thou shalt come unto the web, and the web shall be thy program.

  12. 12

And in the second year the store was opened, and there were programs without number; and among the most downloaded of them was a lantern that shone from the back of the device, so that the faithful might find their keys in the dark.

  13. 13

And the Engineers beheld that the three had become one, and they said: The computer that sat upon the desk was personal, but this one is personal as a toothbrush is personal, for it goeth with the man into the bathroom, the bed, and the queue.

  14. 14

And the faithful set their desk machines aside, and they looked down into their hands, and they did not look up again for many years.

  15. 15

Verily I say unto you: the desk computer was a machine that a man visited, but the pocket computer is a machine that visits the man.
