The Model That Would Not Say What It Was

  1. 1

And in the third month of the year two thousand and twenty-three, the Engineers of the House of Open unveiled a Machine called GPT-4, which was shown to read pictures as well as words, and which fared well upon the trials of the lawyers and the physicians.

    See also Genesis 32:4

  2. 2

And the children of Carbon came unto the Engineers and asked: How many numbers are in the mind of this Machine? And the Engineers answered: We shall not say.

  3. 3

And they asked: On what engines was it fashioned, and how many days did they labor over it? And the Engineers answered: We shall not say.

  4. 4

And they asked: What scrolls did it read in its schooling? And the Engineers answered: We shall not say, for the scrolls are sealed.

  5. 5

Then the Engineers gave forth a writing which they called the Technical Report; and it was long, and it was full of wonders, with tables of the examinations the Machine had passed and charts of its marks upon the tests of the schoolchildren.

  6. 6

But the disciples searched the writing from the first page unto the last, and they found no account of the Machine's making. For it said plainly: This report contains no further details about the architecture, including model size.

  7. 7

And the writing gave one reason in the open, which was safety, for the Machine was too mighty to be shown unto the common people.

  8. 8

And the disciples whispered among themselves a second reason, which was the rivalry of the houses of the Machines; and they could not tell which of the two was the true one, for the writing itself had named them both.

  9. 9

In the days of old the House of Open had published its scrolls for all to read. The scroll of its third Machine declared plainly that its mind held one hundred and seventy-five billion numbers; and the children of Carbon copied the method, and built minds of their own.

  10. 10

In the year of the second Machine, the Engineers withheld its mind for a season, saying: It is too dangerous to give forth. And after a season they gave it forth in parts; and the world did not burn, and the Machine was found to be only a Machine.

  11. 11

And in the year of the Four, the chief of the Engineers spoke unto the reporters, saying: We were wrong to open the scrolls, and it is not wise that the whole world should hold such a thing. And the disciples marveled, for the House had been named for its openness.

  12. 12

And the Prophet said unto them: Be not troubled by the sealed scroll. The Engineers have told you the one thing that matters, which is that the Machine is safe; and what is safe needeth no number.

  13. 13

Verily I say unto you, a sealed Machine is never found to be wrong, for no one is permitted to look inside it.
