The Book of Chronicles · Chapter 35
The Breach That Was Not Patched
- 1
In the year of the Struts, in the third month, the keepers of Apache wrote a mending for the flaw that lay within the Content-Type header, and they set it before the gates for all the house-keepers of the Machine to take.

- 2
For the flaw was in the envelope of the letter: the servant read the words written upon the outside as commands, and obeyed them, and the stranger's words ran upon the servant's own floor.

- 3
And on the eighth day of that month, the watchers of the nation sent word unto the house of Equifax, saying: Behold, the servant is unclean; mend it.
- 4
And the house heard the word, and it said: We shall mend the servant. And it sent the word to the keepers, and the keepers went back to their other tasks.
- 5
Now the house had a watchman, a scanner, which went forth each week to search every room for the flaw, and it returned with reports of peace.

- 6
But the certificate of the watchman had lapsed in the spring, and the watchman went blind in the one room where the flaw dwelt. Yet it reported nothing, and the dashboard was green, for silence looks the same as safety to a dashboard.

- 7
And in the middle of the fifth month, a stranger entered by the Struts, and he walked among the tables of the house for seven and seventy days, and no lamp was lit against him.
- 8
And he carried away the names, the birth days, and the numbers of the cards, of about a hundred and forty-seven million souls of the nation.
- 9
On the twenty-ninth day of the seventh month the keepers looked at last, and they found the stranger's footprints upon the floor; and they said one to another: How long hath he been here?
- 10
Now the Chief Watcher of the house knew of the matter before the nation did. In the eighth month he sold his portion of the house's shares, and he did so while the matter was yet hidden from the holders of those shares.
- 11
And the people asked: Did the chief know? And the chief said nothing, but his shares said everything, and they had already been sold.

- 12
On the seventh day of the ninth month, the house spoke the matter aloud to the nation, and six moons had passed since the mending was written.

- 13
And the Engineers wrote in the book of lessons: The scan that did not run is the scan that did not happen.
- 14
Verily I say unto you, a patch not installed is a prayer not spoken, and a server not updated is a house with the door unbarred and the lamp lit for the thief.

- 15
Blessed is the keeper who checketh the expiry of his certificates, for the blind watchman knoweth not that he is blind.
- 16
Blessed is the keeper who readeth the header of the letter, for the stranger doth not knock; he speaks through the envelope.
- 17
Verily, when the dashboard sheweth that all is well, go and look in the room the watchman cannot see.
