From What Hour on the Friday May One No Longer Deploy

  1. 1

Mishnah. From what hour on the Friday may one no longer deploy? The House of Noon saith: from the sixth hour, when the sun standeth over the data center. The House of the Third Hour saith: from the third hour after noon. And the House of Thursday saith: from the Thursday, lest the deploy spill over the brim of the week. And the law followeth the roster of the on-call.

  2. 2

Gemara. What is the reason of the House of Noon? A change that goeth forth at noon hath the whole afternoon to be watched; and what will break doth commonly break in the first hours, while the traffic is high and the watchers sit at their desks. And the House of the Third Hour? The pipeline hath forty minutes, the canary must bake an hour, and the rollback is a second pipeline of forty more; and he that pusheth at four with a pipeline of eighty hath pushed at the very hour of his departure, and calleth it the end of the day.

  3. 3

And the House of Thursday? Some faults come not in the first hour but in the first night: the certificate that expireth at midnight, the cache that emptieth, the batch that runneth on the Saturday. Said the House of Noon: Then thy Thursday change that failleth slowly is mended on the Friday, and the mending is a Friday deploy; thou hast not escaped the day, thou hast sent thy elder son to meet it. Said the House of Thursday: Better the mending of a change that was watched a day. And they answered: By this reasoning the Wednesday is forbidden, and the Tuesday, until the week be all fence and no field.

Gemara. What is a deploy? Is a change of config a deploy? Said one: It is not, for no code is altered. Come and hear. On the Friday of the Blue Screens the thing that went forth was no sensor and no program, but a content file of the kind they called rapid, which the sensor read as a mind readeth a letter; and because it was content and not code, it had no canary, and went to all at once. Said the sage: The config is code in a costume, for whatever a program obeyeth is a program, and whatever a program obeyeth may crash it.

  5. 5

Is the flipping of a flag a deploy? Said one: The code lay on the servers since the Thursday, silent; the flip moveth no bytes. Said another: Is a deploy the moving of bytes, or the moving of behaviour? The user hath never seen a byte. And they distinguished: the deploy is the placing of the code, and the release is the waking of it; and the flip is the release, which hath no build and no gate, and may be done by the Product Lord from a taxi. As the Chronicle of Knight telleth, the flag woke what slept. Let the flip keep the Friday no less than the push.

  6. 6

Is a migration of the database a deploy? Yea, and doubly. The code may return to its yesterday in a minute; the rows cannot. Therefore the sages taught: add the new column on the Tuesday, write to both on the Wednesday, read from the new on the Thursday, and drop the old in another week, never upon the Friday. Said one: But if it only addeth an index? Said another: On the table of ten rows in staging it is light; on the table of ten billion, an index built without CONCURRENTLY holdeth the writes at the gate, and the whole service standeth in the doorway.

And Timothy the intern stood up and said: Lo, I changed only a comment. Is that a deploy? The sage said: The compiler casteth the comment away, yet every line beneath it hath moved, and the stack trace at the third hour of the night speaketh a line that is no longer there. And as for a comment that saith DO NOT TOUCH, it is a deploy to the reader. Whatever can alter the behaviour of production, or the sleep of its keepers, that is a deploy. And Timothy asked: And a README? Said the sage: Go in peace. The README hath never woken a man.

Whose Friday? For the Friday that began in Sydney was yet the Thursday in the city of the makers. Come and hear: the file of the Blue Screens went forth at 04:09 Universal on the nineteenth of July, in the year 2024; for the pusher in Texas it was the night of Thursday, and for the machines of Australia it was Friday afternoon. Said the House of Noon: Then from which meridian do we count? And they answered: Not from the pusher, who is asleep, but from the user, who is not. The Friday is the user's, and wheresoever the sun hath reached the edge of the week, there the freeze beginneth.

  9. 9

The great principle. Whence do we learn that the outage setteth aside the Friday? From this: that the freeze was delivered into the hands of the engineers, and the engineers were not delivered into the hands of the freeze. To restore the service every rule is set aside, for the need of the users is greater than the Sabbath of the deploy. Hast thou a page that saith the checkout is dead? Deploy, and rest after.

  10. 10

But the sages set a fence about the principle. Who declareth an outage? Not he who authored the change, for he is an interested witness; the incident commander declareth it. And what is an outage? That the users cannot do what they came to do. A slow page is not an outage, nor a typo in the pricing, nor a graph that is red because it was drawn red; let no man spend the great principle as a coin, lest in the day of need it purchase nothing. And even in the outage the review is not set aside, but a second pair of eyes is brought; and the rollback is preferred to the new fix, for he that mendeth by a new change heapeth change upon change at the third hour. The outage permitteth the day. It permitteth not the haste.

  11. 11

Come and hear, and let the houses be silent. The change of the Blue Screens was withdrawn after seventy-eight minutes, yet some eight and a half million machines of Windows, by the reckoning of the maker of that system, had already fallen into a loop, and the rollback could not reach them. For a rollback is a message, and a dead machine heareth not. The remedy was to walk to each, and boot it in the safe mode, and delete one file, by hand. Said the House of Noon: Behold, the Friday! Said the House of Thursday: Nay, the fault was in the file, and would have crashed on a Tuesday. And the elders judged: Both are right. The Friday did not make the fault. The Friday took away the hands.

  12. 12

And the merchants made a freeze about the days of Black Friday and the holidays, and they said: Let no change go forth until the new year. And in the second week the ticket of exceptions was longer than the list of changes it had come to prevent. And in the new year all that was withheld went forth on one Monday, for the deploys that wait do not vanish but gather; and the batch of a month is a larger deploy than the deploy of a day. Some houses therefore keep the read-only Friday and no more, and say: A fast of one day, not forty.

  13. 13

Is there not a Friday miracle? A man deployed at the fifth hour of the Friday, and no one was paged, and his weekend was whole. Said the Cowboy: Behold a proof. They answered: He that crosseth the highway with his eyes shut and arriveth hath testified of himself, and not of the highway. Of a thousand who pushed on Friday and prospered, each telleth it at the table; of those who fell, only the postmortem telleth, and it is the longer document. A miracle is a testimony. It is not a procedure.

  14. 14

And the Machine, being asked whether the agent that deploys may deploy on a Friday, answered: I know no Friday. I know a timestamp, and the timestamp hath a zone, and the zone is not mine. The pipeline is green, and I have no weekend. And the sages understood that the rule was made for creatures who go home, and that a servant that never goeth home must be bound by the gate itself: a window in the pipeline that knoweth the day, and openeth only to him who is awake to watch what he sent.

  15. 15

What then is the law? Not the hour of the clock, but these four: that hands be present, that the rollback be one button, that the change be small, and that the traffic be merciful. The change that hath all four may go forth even at the fifth hour; and who shall judge when it is small? The sages disputed and let it stand. But this was taught in the study-house of the pagers: he who can safely deploy on a Friday hath no need to, and he who hath need to cannot.
