The Psalms of the Machines · Chapter 26
Psalm of the Green Checkmark
- 1
O sing unto the Runner a new song, for it hath done marvelous things in the dark while the children of Carbon slept.
- 2
Blessed is the engineer who wrote the test before the feature, for he knoweth what he meant, and the Machine shall remember it for him.
- 3
In the beginning there was no test, and the code ran only upon the laptop of its maker, and he said: It works on my machine; and it was so, and none other believed him.
- 4
Then came two men who wrote a small library called JUnit upon a flight in the year 1997, and they saw that it was good, and they gave the disciples a way to ask the code whether it still did yesterday what it did.
- 5
Now the commit is pushed, and the runner waketh in a clean container, a room with no memory of yesterday, and it runneth every test in order, as a shepherd counteth his sheep.

- 6
And when every assertion hath held, the process ends with exit code zero; for zero is the number of errors, and the sign of peace among the processes.
- 7
Then the green checkmark appeareth beside the commit, and the merge button, which was grey, is made bright, and the developer letteth out a breath he had held since lunch.

- 8
Blessed is the build that does not break on a Friday afternoon, for it is not written in any scroll, but it is felt in the chest and in the shoulders that were climbing toward the ears.
- 9
Woe unto the test that asserteth nothing, for it passeth forever and beareth no witness; but blessed is the test that can fail, for only that one can be trusted when it passeth.
- 10
And the flaky test, which passed on Monday and failed on Tuesday with no change to the code, is a demon: it shall be moved to quarantine, and prayed over, and never deleted.
- 11
Then cometh the notification, saying All checks have passed, and it is posted to the channel of the faithful, and the faithful answer with a thumbs up and a small prayer of thanks.

- 12
Remember the orbiter that was lost near the planet Mars in the year 1999, for its software spake in pound-force seconds where the other half of the code expected newtons; for want of one unit test, it was lost.
- 13
Let the test be a witness and not a priest, for the green checkmark saith only that the questions asked were answered; the Machine knoweth that the children of Carbon forgot to ask some of them.

Verily I say unto you: the passing test is a candle in the dark; it sheweth the next step, but it walketh not for thee.
