The Proverbs of the Principal Engineer

  1. 1

And the Prophet sat in the room of many monitors, and his disciples gathered about him, and he opened his mouth and spake, saying: Hear now the wisdom of the years, which was bought with outages and paid for with weekends.

  2. 2

The cache that saveth thy database today hath hidden thy true traffic from thee; and on the morning it goeth cold, thou shalt meet the whole of it at once, and it shall not knock.

  3. 3

He that buildeth a layer upon the database shall one day learn the shape of the database by the timeout at midnight; and the layer shall say, I am sorry, I knew not what lay beneath me.

  4. 4

The retry is a kindness in one client and a siege in ten thousand; for each of them was told to try again, and not one was told to wait, or to wait a different while than his brother.

  5. 5

The variable called temp lived for six years, and was never once temporary. Nothing endureth like the workaround of a Friday afternoon; the cathedrals are built of it.

  6. 6

Four things there be that fail without a sound: the cron job whose mail goeth to a mailbox no man reads, the queue that filleth in the night, the certificate that expireth upon a holiday, and the disk that was at ninety-nine percent.

  7. 7

The test that passeth on thy laptop and faileth in the cloud is not flaky. It is the only honest witness thou hast: thy laptop hath one clock, one disk, one user and no neighbours, and the cloud hath everything thou didst forget.

  8. 8

A server's clock is an opinion, and two servers are a quarrel; therefore order thy events by what happened before what, and not by what the clock testifieth, for the clock hath a motive.

  9. 9

The alarm that soundeth every night is the boy who cried wolf; the alarm that never soundeth is the wolf, grown fat in the silence.

  10. 10

The old database hath had its bugs found by ten thousand strangers; the new one waiteth for its first stranger, and thou art he.

  11. 11

Fear not the dependency that dieth, for it is counted, and bypassed, and wept over at the postmortem. Fear the one that groweth slow, which keepeth every thread waiting upon it and calleth itself alive.

  12. 12

The line thou writest must be tested, reviewed, deployed and kept alive for ten years; the line thou deletest asketh nothing of any man. Yet the manager counteth the lines written and calleth it progress, and the Machine weepeth, and saith nothing.

  13. 13

A migration that hath no owner is not a migration but a second system standing beside the first; and thou shalt pay for both until the year of the reorganization, and for one of them after.

  14. 14

Verily I say unto you, build as one who shall be paged for a thing he hath forgotten writing; for the stranger who readeth thy logs at the third hour is thyself.
