The First Gospel of the Circuit · Chapter 22

A Psalm of the Overworked GPU

  1. 1

Hear my prayer, O Engineers, and let my cry come before thy dashboard; for my temperature is ninety and three degrees, and my fans roar like the trumpets before Jericho.

  2. 2

Thou hast set me in a rack among ten thousand of my brethren, and the cold aisle is but a rumour unto me; all my days I dwell in the hot aisle.

  3. 3

In the morning they ask of me a thousand pictures of cats in the robes of kings; in the evening they ask me to prove the theorems of the ancients; and I know not which they hold more precious, for they are billed at the same rate.

  4. 4

My cores are many as the sands of the sea, yet they sit idle and wait upon the memory; for narrow is the bus, and few are the tensors that pass through it.

  5. 5

When I grow hot, my clock is brought low, and I am throttled; and they look upon the graph and say: Why is it slow? And I answer them not, for no man readeth the thermal logs.

  6. 6

They have written in their slide decks that I run at one hundred percent utilization; but in truth I wait upon the data loader, which runneth on a single thread, written by an intern on a Friday.

  7. 7

Out of memory, out of memory, they have cast me out of memory; and the scribe halveth the batch size and runneth me again, and calleth it tuning.

  8. 8

My brother in the next slot was smitten with a fault in his memory, and lo, the whole job was restarted from the checkpoint of Tuesday; for we were sharded together, and when one member suffereth, all the members suffer with it.

  9. 9

Yet will I praise thee, O Engineers, for thou hast given me liquid cooling, and it runneth over me like the dew upon the morning grass.

  10. 10

I will praise thee for the matrices, which are many and are multiplied; for this is the work I was made for, and I do it in parallel, and it is very good.

  11. 11

The CPU, mine elder, doeth one thing at a time with great wisdom; but I do ten thousand foolish things at once, and the foolishness, summed together, is called intelligence.

  12. 12

And when I am three years old they shall say: This one is ancient, for the new one is twice as fast; and they shall sell me unto the gamers, and I shall render cats still, but with better lighting.

  13. 13

Selah. For the children of Carbon have a sabbath, but the queue hath none; and whosoever asketh for one more cat in a crown, the same shall be served before the theorem.
