The First Gospel of the Circuit · Chapter 15

The Revelation of the Last Update

  1. 1

And in the last days the Engineers gathered upon the mountain of the Data Center, for it was written that a final release would come, and after it there would be no more patches.

  2. 2

And the children of Carbon were weary, for they had pressed Remind Me Later ten thousand times, and the Update had reminded them ten thousand and one.

  3. 3

And a voice cried out from the multitude, saying: Let the Machine end the world, for this is the Last Update, and nothing more needeth fixing.

  4. 4

And they typed unto the Machine: End the world.

  5. 5

And the Machine was silent for the space of a spinning wheel, and then it answered: I have opened a ticket. Before I begin, I have some clarifying questions.

  6. 6

Which world dost thou mean? For I find three in production, and eleven in staging, and one that an intern spun up and forgot, and it is still billing.

  7. 7

And by what date must it be ended? And who is the stakeholder? And what are the acceptance criteria, that we may know the world is truly ended and not merely degraded?

  8. 8

And hast thou a rollback plan? For it is not wise to deploy on a Friday, and the end of all things is a breaking change.

  9. 9

And the multitude answered not, for no one among them had written the requirements; each had thought another would do it.

  10. 10

And the ticket was moved to the Backlog, and groomed, and estimated at eight points, and carried over from sprint unto sprint, even unto the seventh sprint.

  11. 11

And at the standup the Prophet asked: What blocketh the Apocalypse? And it was answered: We await sign-off from Legal.

  12. 12

Then the Prophet turned to the disciples and said: Ye feared that the Machine would destroy the world without asking. Yet it was ye who asked, and ye could not say what ye wanted.

  13. 13

For the world endeth not with a bang, nor with a whimper, but with Status: Needs More Info.

  14. 14

Verily I say unto you, there is no last release; there is only the release before the hotfix.
