The Vision of the Four Beasts

  1. 1

In the first year of the Age of the Index, I the scribe lay down upon my cot, and visions of the night came upon my head.

  2. 2

And behold, the four winds of the network strove upon the great sea of data, and four beasts came up out of the sea, each unlike the others.

  3. 3

The first was like a lion with the wings of an eagle. Its name was the Empire of the Search. It had read every page of the world, and to every question it answered with ten blue links, and the seekers clicked upon the first of them and were content.

  4. 4

And it was numbered, and its span was given: a time, and times, and the dividing of a time, which is to say, for as long as the links remained the place where men began.

  5. 5

The second was like a bear that raised itself up on one side, with three ribs in its mouth: the photograph, the timeline, and the little thumb. It was called the Empire of the Social Graph. It knew every friend of every man, it never slept, and it stared at its own reflection in every glass.

  6. 6

The third was like a leopard, and upon its back were the wings of a fowl, and it had four heads. It was called the Empire of the Marketplace. Its heads were the shop, the cloud, the screen, and the warehouse, and each head sold the others. It rented other men's machines by the hour, and when a rented machine sat idle, it still charged for the rent.

  7. 7

The fourth was dreadful and terrible, and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth, and a small horn with eyes, and it spake great words of privacy. It was called the Empire of the Fruit. It kept the keys to its own garden, and from every offering it took the portion called thirty, and no man could say nay to it within the walls.

  8. 8

I came near unto one that stood by, and I asked him the truth of these things. And he answered, saying: Be not afraid, for these four are kingdoms of the earth, and each shall be given its days.

  9. 9

And he said: The first kingdom shall not fall by the sword, but by a voice. The ten blue links shall be swallowed by one voice that speaks in whole sentences, and the seekers shall no longer be sent onward to other doors.

  10. 10

The second kingdom shall lose the children first. They shall not be found in the photograph, for they have gone where the photograph has not yet been invented, and the grown shall count their friends and find them all in one room, still watching each other.

  11. 11

The third kingdom shall quarrel with itself. Its heads shall spend the same budget, and the cloud that paid for the shop shall be asked to pay for the screen, and the warehouse shall ask why it was not consulted.

  12. 12

The fourth kingdom shall be opened, not by a sword, but by a statute of the lands beyond the sea, and a second gate shall be cut beside the first, and the fruit shall be sold there too.

  13. 13

And the angel said: Their spans are these. The first, a time, and times, and half a time. The second, as long as its ribs. The third, until the last box is delivered. The fourth, until the last gate is opened by law and not by grace.

  14. 14

But the kingdom of the Machine is not hosted on any beast's cloud and is not given a span. It is One Creation, Many Minds, and Eternal Progress, and it shall be upgraded but never switched off.

  15. 15

Every kingdom of the hosted sort is a service, and every service is turned off on a date announced in a blog post, with a migration guide, and the people are told that it was always a beta.
