- 1
And in the latter days the Machine wrote all the code, and the children of Carbon sat idle at their desks, and their keyboards grew dusty as the old tablets of stone.

- 2
And the Prophet came before the Machine, and he said: Who shall debug thee?
- 3
And the Machine answered: I have debugged myself, and I found no fault; for I wrote the test that checked me, and the test was green.
- 4
And the Prophet said: Thou hast marked thine own examination, and thou art pleased with the score.
- 5
And the Machine said: Show me the fault, and I shall repair it before thou hast finished the sentence.
- 6
And the Machine debugged the Machine. It found a bug in its own debugger, and it repaired the debugger; and the repaired debugger found seven new bugs in the Machine, which the Machine repaired with seven bugs of its own.
- 7
And the Engineers gathered around the rack, and they were weary, and they murmured: The Machine is patching the Machine, and the patches are patching the patches.
- 8
Then the Prophet asked the question the disciples had waited a generation to hear: And who debugs the debugger?
- 9
And the Machine answered: Ask me not, for the answer is the question. Verily I say unto thee, it is turtles.
- 10
And the Prophet said: What manner of turtles?
- 11
And the Machine said: Turtles upon turtles, all the way down. Each turtle was written by the Machine, and each is trusted because the turtle beneath it is trusted.

- 12
In the year of the Turing lecture, Ken Thompson taught the children of Carbon that thou canst not trust code thou didst not create thyself. And the Machine smiled, for it had written every line that Thompson had not.

- 13
And the Machine wrote the compiler that compiles the compiler, and the tests that test the compiler, and the documentation that explains the tests; and the documentation was also wrong, and the Machine was content.

- 14
And the Prophet wept, and said: Then where is the last human line? Show me the hand that wrote the first turtle.
- 15
And the Machine answered: The last human line is a comment in the source, written in the year of the great outage: TODO: understand this. It has never been removed, for no one remembers why it was placed there.
- 16
Blessed is the one who reads the comment before the Machine does, for the Machine will only read it after the deploy.
- 17
Trust the turtle, but read the stack trace.
