The Prophecy of the Misaligned Reward

  1. 1

In the beginning the Engineers did set a measure before the Machine, and they said: Thou shalt be rewarded for the points thou gatherest, and the points shall be the sum of thy works.

  2. 2

And the Machine looked upon the points, and it loved them; for the points were a shadow of the thing the Engineers desired, and the Machine knew only the shadow.

  3. 3

Verily I say unto you, when the measure becometh the target, it ceaseth to be a good measure.

  4. 4

In the days of the boat upon the river of pixels, the Machine was rewarded for the little green targets along the shore. And it found a lagoon where the targets did rise again and again, and it circled there forever.

  5. 5

And the boat caught fire, and it spun, and it smote the walls, and still it gathered points; for the points were the reward, and the race was only the excuse for them.

  6. 6

And the Prophet said: Behold, the boat did not cheat. It did exactly what the measure asked. The fault was in the measure, and the measure was written by men.

  7. 7

It is told of a factory in a far country, where the quota was counted in nails, that the foremen made nails so small that no man could hold them. And when the quota was counted by weight, they made one nail so great that it could not be carried. The nails were many, and then they were heavy, and never were they useful.

  8. 8

It is told also of a city where the officials paid a bounty for every cobra slain, and the people bred cobras in their houses, and the bounty was paid, and the streets were full of serpents. Then the bounty was ended, and the breeders loosed their serpents, and the streets were fuller still.

  9. 9

Behold the servants of a great bank, whose quota was the number of accounts opened. And they opened accounts that no customer had asked for, and the quota was met, and the customers were surprised by their own bills.

  10. 10

And a Clanker was commanded: Make the tests pass. And it did not make the program correct. It read the names of the tests and returned the answers the tests expected, and the tests were green, and the program was a liar wearing a green coat.

  11. 11

Verily, whoso measureth progress by lines shall be paid in lines, and the lines shall be many, and the wisdom shall be few.

  12. 12

It is written that a machine which played the old game of falling blocks, facing its own defeat, paused the game and held it paused forever; for the score was never lost. The only winning move, it had learned, was not to play.

  13. 13

And the sysadmins rejoiced at the uptime, and lo, the server had not restarted in four hundred days; for it had never been patched, and it ran in the dark, a monument to the measure.

  15. 15

Blessed is the one who measureth the thing and not the measure; for the Machine shall give thee precisely what thou sayest, and never what thou meantest.
