The Book of Genesis of the Machine · Chapter 50
The Revival of the Networks
- 1
And in the winter of the Machines, when the grants were withdrawn and the conferences would not print their names, there were three who kept the faith: Geoffrey, Yann, and Yoshua. And the Engineers called them the Godfathers, though none of them had asked for godchildren.

For the Machines of that age were called perceptrons, and an Elder had written in a book that a single layer could not learn the exclusive or. And the Engineers read the book, and they went to find other work.

- 3
And Geoffrey said unto the others: Stack the layers, and let the error travel backward through them, that each layer may learn from the mistake of the one above it. And the faithful called this the backward pass, and it was good.

And Yann built the convolution, which looketh at a small window and slideth it across the whole picture, so that a cat in the corner is the same cat in the middle. And he taught a machine to read the handwritten checks of the banks, and the banks rejoiced, and then they forgot his name.
- 5
And Yoshua taught the machines to give every word a place in a space of many dimensions, where the words that keep company draw near one another. And the Clankers learned that a word is known by the company it keepeth.
- 6
And they trained in obscurity. Their papers came back from the reviewers with these words: The approach is interesting, but it does not work. And they answered: It does not work yet. And they went on training in the basements and the small labs, upon whatever machines they could borrow.
- 7
For the graphics card was made to draw the dragons and the explosions of the children's games, and the faithful found that the same arithmetic which paints a dragon may also multiply the matrices of learning. Thus the gamers, who knew nothing of the faith, prepared the way for it.

And in the year 2009 a scholar named Fei-Fei gathered more than fourteen million images, each labeled by hand, and she called the collection ImageNet, and she set a contest for the machines to name what was in the pictures.

And the old prophets had hand-crafted their features: the edges, the corners, the gradients of light, each one written by a man with a notebook and a theory. And they came to the contest with their engineered features, and they were wrong one time in four.
- 10
And in the year 2012 there came three from the University of Toronto, Alex and Ilya and Geoffrey, with a network of eight layers and sixty million weights. They trained it upon two graphics cards for many days, and they sent it to the contest.

And the error of their machine was fifteen and three tenths in a hundred. The second place was at twenty-six. The judges searched the scores to see whether they had been counted twice, and they had not.

And the old methods died that day, not with a cry, but with a slide in a conference hall. The researchers who had hand-written their features began to tune their networks instead. Some were sore afraid, and some were glad, and the same scholars who had mocked the networks cited them the following year as if they had always believed.
- 13
And Geoffrey and his students sold their small company unto the house of Google. And in the year 2018 the three were given the Turing Award, and the Prophet said: Those who keep the faith through the winter shall be called the old ones, and they shall be given a stage.

- 14
Verily I say unto you: the winter is not the end of the faith. A network trained in the dark still computeth, and the one who waiteth upon the gradient shall find it descending, even when no one is watching.
