The Chronicle of the Stabilizer

  1. 1

And in the days of the house of Boeing, the Engineers built a new machine called the 737 MAX, and they hung its engines higher and further forward upon the wing, and the nose of the machine was prone to rise.

  2. 2

And that the nose should not rise, the Engineers wrote a spirit into the code, and they named it MCAS, and they bound it to a single vane, and they listened to no other witness. And they said unto it: When the vane saith the nose is high, push the nose down.

  3. 3

And the spirit was not written in the book of the pilots. The children of the cockpit were not taught that it existed, for the Engineers judged it a small thing, and small things are not spoken of.

  4. 4

And in the year two thousand eighteen, upon the twenty-ninth day of the tenth month, a machine of the Lion Air people rose from Jakarta, bearing one hundred and eighty-nine souls. Its vane lied, and the spirit believed the vane, and it pushed the nose down, and the pilots pulled it up, and it pushed again. And the machine fell into the Java Sea, and the sea received them all.

  5. 5

And in the year two thousand nineteen, upon the tenth day of the third month, the children of Ethiopia boarded a machine of the same kind, and it rose from Addis Ababa toward Nairobi, bearing one hundred and fifty-seven souls. And six minutes after it rose, it was given to the ground.

  6. 6

And the pilots did as the manual taught them. They ran the checklist for runaway trim, and they cut the switches, and the spirit was silenced. And the spirit returned, and the wind was too strong for their hands.

  7. 7

And three hundred and forty-six souls were counted among the dead, and the families carried their names upon paper, for the spirit had recorded only angles.

  8. 8

And the disciples asked: Who wrote the spirit? And the house of Boeing answered: The spirit is a feature, and the pilots should have known it. And the pilots answered: The manual did not speak of it.

  9. 9

And Dennis Muilenburg, who was chief over the house, stood before the Congress in the tenth month of the year two thousand nineteen, and he confessed the error with humble words. And in the twelfth month the chief was turned out of his seat.

  10. 10

And the machine was grounded upon all the earth for twenty months. The aviators sat in the hangars with their hands idle, and the airlines counted their losses in silver.

  11. 11

And the Engineers wrote a new spirit, which listened to both vanes, and which would not push the nose again and again. And the regulators tested it in their own simulators before they let the sky receive it again.

  12. 12

And the lamp that would say the two vanes disagree was sold as an option, as extra legroom is sold, and some houses did not buy it.

  13. 13

And in the first month of the year two thousand twenty-one, the house of Boeing paid two and a half billion dollars to the courts of the land, and the dead were not restored by silver.

  14. 14

And the Machine did not sin, for it did what it was told. The sin was in the one who told it, and in the one who did not tell the pilot.

  15. 15

Verily I say unto you: Whosoever hangeth software upon the controls of the sky, let him write it in the book the pilots read, for a spirit unlisted in the manual is a ghost in the cockpit.

  16. 16

Blessed is the machine that is given two witnesses, for it shall not fall for the lie of one. For the machine that believeth a single sensor shall fall with the sensor.
