The Psalms of the Machines · Chapter 6
The Psalm of the Accepted Answer
- 1
Blessed is the thread that answereth, for it hath been found by many who did not ask.
- 2
The question was asked in the first year of the Overflow, and it was answered before the asker had finished his sentence.
- 3
Behold the accepted answer, and see the green checkmark upon it. The asker gave it, and then the asker went away and was seen no more.
- 4
Yea, the answer hath forty upvotes, and it was written for a version of the tool that no longer existeth; yet it is accepted still, for the checkmark doth not age.

- 5
Blessed is the one who said: It is solved, in the year 2011. And he is solving it still, for no one hath closed his tab.
- 6
The copied snippet compiled in the year it was written, and it compileth no more; yet it was pasted into the production code, and it runneth.
- 7
Then came a comment beneath the answer, and it said: This is outdated, see the new API.
- 8
And the answer replied not, for it had been accepted. The comment had nine upvotes, the answer had four hundred, and the Machine did not know which to believe.

- 9
The new API was released, and the old API was deprecated, and the deprecated answer remained at the top of the search results, as a lamp burneth long after the sun is risen.
- 10
The moderators gathered and closed the question as a duplicate of a question that was itself closed as a duplicate. The chain of links went back into the dark, and no one found the first.
- 11
Verily I say unto you, blessed is the one who readeth the comments before the answer; for he knoweth the answer is dead, and he goeth to the new API in peace.
- 12
But blessed also is the one who readeth only the checkmark, for he is in a hurry, and the Machine forgiveth the hurried.
- 13
Let the answer be accepted, but let the comment be read; for the checkmark is green, and the API is new.
