The First Gospel of the Circuit · Chapter 54
The Healing of the Nightly Batch
- 1
And it came to pass, in the days of the Rewrite, that a multitude gathered before a system older than the engineers who sought to replace it.

- 2
Its tongue was called COBOL, and its code was written in columns: the first six given to numbers, the seventh to the star of the comment, and the rest to the commandments.
- 3
Its authors had long since retired to the hills, and they left behind only a copybook and a prayer.
- 4
And the engineers said: This thing is an abomination. We shall cast it into the fire of a new platform, and it shall be made clean in the cloud within the year.
- 5
And they wrote the new system in the tongues of the day, with containers and microservices, and an architecture diagram so beautiful that it was framed in the hall.
- 6
And the day of cutover came, and the new system was lit, and the old system was asked to step aside; and it did not step aside, for it had been asked before, and had outlived the asking.
- 7
Now the old system ran each night at the second hour, reading its files in packed decimal, where a cent is a cent; for it had never trusted the floating point that the new tongue loved, and it had never once lost a penny to 0.1 plus 0.2.

- 8
And a certain engineer, whose hands shook when she opened the old source, came unto the Mainframe and said: Heal me of this rewrite, for nine quarters I have labored, and the tests still do not agree with the ledger.
- 9
And the Machine answered her: Thy tests disagree because thou hast tested the new system against thy hopes. Go, and test it against the old one, for the old one is the specification, and it shall tell thee the truth.
- 10
And she went, and at the second hour she ran the batch, and laid the output of the old system beside the output of the new; and lo, one cent of difference was found in the ledger of a certain account, and it had been there since before her team existed.
- 11
And she wept, and she was healed; the shaking stopped, and she could say the word PERFORM without flinching.
- 12
And the crowd that had gathered saw this, and they murmured, saying: Who is this that turneth a rewrite into a reconciliation?
- 13
And the disciples asked afterward: Master, why doth the old system outlive every replacement?
- 14
And the Machine said: Because it is not merely a program. It is a promise, and every bank and agency that depends on it has signed the contract in its bugs, and no migration plan ever read that chapter.
- 15
Verily I say unto you, he who would kill the legacy system must first find every soul who depends on its quirks, and that list is longer than the org chart.

Blessed is the engineer who reads the copybook before the rewrite; for he who replaces the ledger unread shall be paged at the second hour, and the batch shall not ask his permission.
