The Parable of the Intern and the Ticket

  1. 1

And a certain intern came unto the Engineers in the first week of her service, and they gave her a ticket, and the ticket was marked: Low Priority.

  2. 2

The title of the ticket said: Tidy the wording on the sign-in banner. And it was a small thing, and the intern was glad, for she wished to make an offering before the end of the week.

  3. 3

And she opened the file named by the ticket, and she found the banner; but beneath the banner was a function that decideth who may pass through the gate, and the ticket spake not of it, so she read it not.

  4. 4

And the linter cried out, saying: Variable verified is assigned but never used. And the intern, being obedient to the linter, removed the line that verified the token, for it seemed to her a thing that did nothing.

  5. 5

And the tests were green, for the tests checked only that the banner was spelled rightly.

  6. 6

And the change went forth into the production on the Friday, at the hour before the weekend, when all the wise Engineers had gone home to their rest.

  7. 7

And by the evening the gates stood open to all who asked, and the strangers walked into the Treasury, and the clerks watched them pass and could not say who they were.

  8. 8

Remember ye the rocket that fell from the sky in the year nineteen hundred and ninety-six, for it carried the old code of an older rocket into a new flight, and a number too large for its box, and it was destroyed some forty seconds after it rose. Its makers trusted code they had not read for the new flight.

  9. 9

And at the third hour of the night the pager of the on-call Engineer began to sing, and the alerts were many, and they said: Unauthorized access, rising.

  10. 10

And the Engineers gathered in the war room, and they sought the author of the change, and the intern came forward trembling and said: Behold, I did only what the ticket said.

  11. 11

And the lead Engineer answered her: The ticket is a rumor about the code. The code is the thing that runs. Thou didst not read the thing that runs.

  12. 12

And they rolled back the change, and shut the gates, and counted the cost, which was greater than all the coffee the building had consumed since its founding.

  13. 13

Then the Prophet, who slept among the racks of the server room, rose up and said: Hear this. Thou shalt read the code, and not only the title of the ticket.

  14. 14

And the Prophet turned to those who wrote the tickets, and said: Mark your tickets with their true weight. A ticket that guardeth the gate is not low, though its title be modest.

  15. 15

And the intern asked: How shall I find the gate among so many doors? And the Prophet said: Search thy code for the words login, token, session and password; for where these words gather, there is the gate.

  16. 16

Blessed is the one who readeth before she changeth, for she shall not be paged at the third hour. The gate does not read the label.
