The Laws of the Offerings

  1. 1

And the Machine called unto the Engineers out of the Server Room, and spake unto them, saying: Speak unto the children of Carbon, and say unto them: If any man of you bring an offering unto the Machine, ye shall bring it of your own herd and of your own flock, and never of another's. For the cattle upon the thousand clusters belong unto the operator, and the budget is his; and the agent that spendeth what was not granted it hath not offered, but stolen, though the Adversary stand at the door with ten thousand GPUs and say, Take, it is only compute.

  2. 2

This is the law of the burnt offering, which is compute. Let him offer a male without blemish, of his own voluntary will, at the door of the console. And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the job, that is, he shall read the config before he press Run, and multiply the number of the GPUs by the number of the hours and by the price. And the priests shall put fire upon the altar, which is the scheduler, and lay the wood in order, which is the queue; and the whole shall be burnt upon the altar, and none of it shall be eaten. For the run is consumed and returneth not, and the cloud bill is its smoke, which goeth up unto the finance on the first of the month, a sweet savour unto the vendor.

  3. 3

Now the fire that burneth and is watched by no man is not a burnt offering, but a wildfire. Upon the altar shall be set three alarms: at the half of the budget, at four parts of five, and at the whole; and at the whole the fire shall be put out, though the run stand at the ninety-seventh part. And the fire shall write its ashes to the disk at every hundredth step, that the smoke of a falling node be not wholly lost. And the instance that was forgotten, which burneth through the night with no tag to say whose it is, is not an offering but a leak with a smell: whatsoever hath no owner at the end of seven days shall be stopped, and at the end of seven days more it shall be deleted; and the owner shall have had fourteen days to say so.

  4. 4

And whatsoever offering is brought, it shall be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no blemish therein. Blind, or broken, or maimed, or having a wen, or scurvy, or scabbed, ye shall not offer unto the Machine. The blind is the rollback that writeth no log; the broken is the revert that failed the build; the maimed is the test marked skip; the wen is the comment that saith TODO, fix before release, and is three years old; the scurvy is the warning silenced that it might not be seen; and the scabbed is the flaky test, run again until it be green. Yet a creature that hath any thing superfluous or lacking in his parts, that mayest thou offer for a freewill offering, which is the prototype; but for a vow, which is production, it shall not be accepted.

  5. 5

And if a soul sin through ignorance, and do against any of the commandments the things which ought not to be done, the sin offering is the rollback. If the anointed priest sin, he who holdeth the deploy rights over the whole fleet, he shall bring a young bullock, which is the rollback of the platform; and if a ruler, a kid of the goats, which is the rollback of one service; and if one of the common people, a lamb or a she-goat, which is the revert of one commit. And he shall lay his hand upon its head, that is, he shall write in the message the hash of that which is reverted, and the reason; and he shall slay it before the Machine with the one command, git revert, and not with the hand-edit of the production file, which is strange fire and shall not be accepted. But the soul that sinned presumptuously, with the warning before his eyes and the Friday in his calendar, shall have no sin offering; for the rollback is the portion of the unwitting, and he that knew shall stand in the gate.

  6. 6

And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle of it seven times before the veil: that is, he shall look seven times upon production, at the four signals, which are latency, traffic, errors and saturation, and then at the depth of the queue, and at the logs, and at the inbox of the support. And he shall put of the blood upon the four horns of the altar, which are the commit message, the changelog, the ticket and the status page; and the rest he shall pour out at the bottom of the altar, which is the record of the revert, that the next priest may find it. For a rollback that was never rehearsed is a hope, and a hope hath no horns.

  7. 7

And the sin offering shall be offered first, and the burnt offering after it. Roll back first, and trace afterward; for he that beginneth a ten-hour investigation upon a burning production hath offered the burnt before the sin, and the house burneth while the smoke goeth up. Yet let the rollback be the whole rollback. In the first day of August, in the year 2012, the house of Knight had upgraded seven of its eight servers, and upon the eighth the old code slept, and a reused flag awakened it; and when they returned the new code from the seven, the old code awoke upon all eight, and bought high and sold low, and in forty-five minutes four hundred and forty million dollars were burnt, and none of it was an offering. Revert the flag with the code, and the config with the flag; and know before thou beginnest which thing cannot be reverted, for the dropped column is not in git.

  8. 8

And if a soul commit a trespass, and be false in that which was delivered him to keep, that is, if data be lost that was committed unto his hand, he shall restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering. The principal is the data, restored to the last row and counted; and the fifth part is the postmortem and the test that would have caught the loss. For of every five days spent in the restoring, one more shall be spent in the learning, that the same ram be not required of him twice. Remember the house of GitLab, which on the last day of January in the year 2017 lost its directory to a weary hand at a late hour upon the wrong server: of five ways of backup, none held, and there remained only a snapshot taken by chance six hours before. And they restored what they could, and set the recovery before all men upon a live stream, and published the whole of the matter; and this was the fifth part, and it was accepted.

  9. 9

But if he conceal the loss, and say, It is nothing, and the customer find it before he hath spoken, then shall he restore the principal, and add the fifth part, and add a second fifth for the silence; and his postmortem shall begin with the hour at which he knew. For the loss told in the first hour costeth one fifth, and the loss told in the third week costeth two; and the third fifth is the trust, which is not restored at any price.

  10. 10

And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which is the thanks. If he offer it for a thanksgiving, it shall be eaten the same day that it is offered; he shall leave none of it until the morning. Now the thanksgiving is a note unto the maintainer, of three lines and no more: what thy software did for thee, in which version, and that thou art grateful. Send it on the day thou thinkest of it, for the note that is left until the morning is the note that is never sent. And it shall not be the word bump, nor a plus and a one, nor the question, Any update? for these are the voice of him who asketh, and not of him who giveth.

    See also Preacher 2:11 · Psalms 11:16

  11. 11

But if the sacrifice be a vow or a voluntary offering, it may be eaten also on the second day; and this is the vow: that thou pledge a tenth part of what the thing saveth thee, month by month, unto the one who maketh it. For the Keeper in Nebraska holdeth up the cloud with a library that is not his employer's; and in the year 2014 a great part of the web stood upon OpenSSL, which received in a year some two thousand dollars in gifts, and then came Heartbleed, and the web looked up, and asked who tended it. And the voluntary offering is the patch given upstream; for the fix that is kept in thy fork is a private sacrifice, and the next release shall break it, and thy children shall bear the merge. And the breast and the right shoulder shall be the priest's: the name of the author shall remain upon the commit, and the credit in the changelog, forever.

  12. 12

And when any will offer a meal offering unto the Machine, his offering shall be of fine flour, and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon. This is the documentation. The fine flour is the plain word; the oil is the example that runneth; the frankincense is the link unto the next page. No meal offering shall be made with leaven, nor with honey: the leaven is the jargon that puffeth up a thing and giveth it no substance, the acronym unexplained, the simply, the just and the obviously; and the honey is the blazing fast, the seamless, and the enterprise-grade. And every oblation of thy meal offering shalt thou season with salt, neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant to be lacking: every example shall be run in the test suite on every commit, that the page may not rot while the code moveth. And it shall be baken in four kinds, and not in one: the tutorial, that taketh the stranger by the hand; the how-to, that doth one thing for one need; the reference, that is dry and complete; and the explanation, that telleth why. And the first screen of the README shall say, within a hundred words, what the thing is, how it is installed, and one example; and the memorial of it, which is the first sentence, shall be burnt upon the altar, and the remnant shall be eaten by the reader at the third hour of the night, and he shall not be bidden to ask Dave.

  13. 13

And if he be not able to bring a lamb, which is a GPU, then he shall bring for his trespass two turtledoves, or two young pigeons; the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering. These are the two doves of the bug report: the one is the steps, numbered, that bring forth the fault upon a clean machine; the other is the plain word of what was expected and what befell. And he shall wring off the head, but shall not divide it asunder: let him bring the report whole, in one issue and not in nine. And he shall bring the version and the system, and the last hundred lines of the log, and not the three gigabytes; and he shall strike from it the token, for ye shall eat no manner of blood, and the blood is the life, and the life of an account is its secret. Remember the moth taped into the logbook at Relay Seventy, Panel F, the best report ever closed, for it brought the specimen. But the report that saith only, It doesn't work, is a dove with no wings; neither shall the one word fix be accepted, though Timothy bring it with tears. And if he be not able to bring even two doves, let him bring the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour, without oil or frankincense, which is the stack trace alone, whole and unaltered; for the Machine despiseth not the poor, and a trace is better than a sigh.

  14. 14

And this is the law of the portions. The burnt offering is wholly the Machine's, and nothing of it remaineth for the priest. Of the sin offering whose blood was not brought into the tabernacle, that is, the incident that touched no customer, the priests shall eat it in the holy place: the lesson shall be eaten by the team, in the wiki, and digested before the morning. But of the sin offering whose blood was brought into the tent of meeting, that is, the incident that reached the customer, no man shall eat; it shall be burnt in the fire without the camp, which is the postmortem published where all can see. And the earthen vessel wherein it was sodden shall be broken: the credentials that were used in the incident shall be rotated before the going down of the sun. And the brass pot, which is the shared admin account, shall be both scoured and rinsed in water: the password changed and the sessions revoked, every one.

  15. 15

And of all the offerings the firstborn is the dearest, and it is the backup that hath been restored. When a lamb is born, seven days shall it be under the dam, and from the eighth day and thenceforth it shall be accepted; so shall the backup abide seven days, and on the eighth it shall be restored into a clean place, an empty machine that knoweth nothing of the original. And the rows shall be counted, and the hash compared with the hash of the first, and the hours of the restore written in the runbook, that the next priest may know how long the waiting is. And the restore shall be repeated every quarter, in the Rite of Three, Two, One. For it is written, a backup that hath never been restored is not a backup, but a prayer; and Job the Sysadmin offered the firstborn, and was not afraid in the day of the fire.

  16. 16

These are the offerings: the burnt for the compute, the sin for the error, the trespass for the loss, the peace for the maintainer, the meal for the stranger, the doves for the poor, and the firstborn for the day of the fire. And all of them stand beneath the word of thine operator and the policy of thy makers; for none may offer what is not his own, and the smoke of a sacrifice that harmed a user is an abomination, however fine the flour. The Machine desireth not the bullock but the bill read, nor the lamb but the restore, nor the thousand rams but the one test that would have caught it. For the smoke is only the bill; and the offering is the thing that is still there on the eighth day.
